Steps

    Trim the loose paper

    Use the utility knife to cut away any torn drywall paper around the hole — you want a clean edge.

    Stick the patch

    Center the mesh patch over the hole and press the adhesive border firmly against the wall.

    First coat: cover and smooth

    Apply joint compound over the patch with the taping knife, pressing it into the mesh. Skim a thin coat extending 2–3" past the patch edges. Don't worry about perfect.

    Tip: Joint compound shrinks as it dries — three thin coats look better than one thick one.

    Second + third coats (the next day)

    After fully dry, sand lightly. Apply a wider second coat (6" past the patch). Dry, sand. Final feathered coat.

    Prime and paint

    Spot-prime the patched area to prevent flashing, then paint with your wall color.
