Steps

    Decide what goes on it

    Pretty knick-knacks: drywall anchors are fine. Books or anything heavy: you must hit studs. If no studs land where you want the shelf, the location moves — not the anchor choice.

    Mark a level line

    Hold the bracket against the wall, level it, and mark holes. Step back and eyeball it before drilling.

  3. 3

    Drill and install hardware

    For studs: pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw. For toggle anchors: drill the size specified on the package, then push the toggle through and tighten.

  4. 4

    Slide on the shelf

    Slide the shelf body onto the bracket. Most have a small set screw on the underside — tighten it to lock the shelf in place.
