Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Making Ice
90% of dead ice makers come down to one of three things: a closed water valve, a clogged or frozen supply line, or the ice maker's on/off arm/switch in the wrong position. Walk through these before assuming you need a $200 ice maker module.

Materials
- +A clogged filter (overdue 6+ months) slows or stops ice production. Check filter age first.
- +Only if testing confirms it's bad — $40–$80 part
Steps
-
1
Check the on/off arm or switch
Most ice makers have a wire bail arm that lifts up to turn the unit off. If lifted, push it down. Newer units have a small toggle switch on the front of the ice maker — confirm "On".
-
2
Replace the water filter if overdue
Most fridges need a new filter every 6 months. An expired filter slows water flow enough to stop ice production. Find the filter (inside the fridge or in the grille below) and twist out — pop in a new one.
-
3
Verify the supply valve under the sink (or behind fridge) is open
A small saddle valve or shutoff feeds the ice maker line. Make sure it's fully open. If you can't find it, follow the fridge water line back to its source.
-
4
Check for a frozen supply tube
The most common silent killer. The water line entering the back of the freezer freezes solid. Unplug fridge, pull out, locate the white plastic tube entering the freezer wall. Heat gently with a hair dryer for 5 minutes. Plug back in.
-
5
Look in the ice maker for a frozen ejector
Pull the ice bin out. Inspect for ice cubes frozen in place against the ejector arms. Thaw with the hair dryer if seen.
-
6
Test the water inlet valve
If filter is new, valve is open, line isn't frozen, and unit still doesn't fill — the water inlet valve at the back of the fridge may be bad. Replace it ($40–$80 part, plug-and-play in 20 minutes).
-
7
Reset by power-cycling
Unplug fridge for 5 minutes, plug back in. Push the ice maker's test button (small button on the front of the module). It should run a full cycle and dump ice in 6–8 hours.

When to call a tech
If you've verified water flow, replaced the filter, and the ice maker module won't cycle even with the test button — replace the module ($80–$200 part, simple swap) or have a tech diagnose the control board.
