Replace a Doorbell Button

A dead or rusted doorbell button is 10 minutes and almost zero risk — the wires are low-voltage (16–24V), so even brushing them won't shock you.

Steps

  1. 1

    Unscrew the old button

Two screws hold most buttons to the door frame. Back them out and pull the button away from the wall — two thin wires will follow.

  2. 2

    Tape the wires

Disconnect the two wires from the back of the old button. Immediately tape them to the wall so they don't retract into the wall cavity. Losing them in the wall = much bigger job.

  3. 3

    Connect to the new button

Wires are interchangeable (polarity doesn't matter on a low-voltage doorbell). Loop each wire around one terminal screw and tighten.

  4. 4

    Mount and test

Screw the new button to the frame, press it — chime should ring.
